Record 900,000 plus Job Openings in Canada
The rate of job vacancies in Canada reached an all-time high in the first quarter of 2022. While many jobs in Canada are in high demand, a few have seen particularly rapid growth in recent years.
So, what are the most in-demand skills in Canada?
This is a difficult question to answer because there is a need for skilled workers in almost every industry in Canada today. According to an in-demand job report, Canada has over 958,000 job openings that need to be filled, indicating an all-time high demand for skilled labour.
Following the pandemic, there is an unexpected demand for skilled professionals in Canada's healthcare and social sectors. There are 152,000 open healthcare positions, according to Statistics Canada's August payroll employment and job vacancy report. Nursing is the most in-demand profession (NOC 3012). However, similar to the Healthcare sector, there are other sectors with unmet skill demand. The construction industry is also experiencing high demand for jobs across all skill levels, with over 82,000 unfilled job vacancies. Some of the most popular NOCs in demand are 7612, 7621, and 0711.
As we all know, software developers (also known as software engineers) are in high demand worldwide, and Canada is no exception. As with nursing and construction, those with software development skills have a plethora of job opportunities, with average salaries being high across all provinces and territories. Some of the most popular NOCs for this are 2174 and 2175. These NOCs are also in high demand in some of the larger provinces.
Manufacturing and retail trade saw very high vacancies as well, with 88,000 in manufacturing and 115,000 in retail trade, and some in demand NOCs in these two sectors are 0911, 2141, 6211, and 6421. With the advancement of technology, demand in the transportation sector has increased. The most in-demand NOCs in this sector are 7511, 7513, 7514, 7515, 1525, and 7305. Business management skills are also in high demand. Senior managers are needed in a variety of industries, making this one of the most in-demand skills in Canada. The most popular NOC is 4163.
